KAFF-EINE + HEARTCORE November 01 2013
In an Australian first, a child and family services organisation and a street artist are collaborating to create a unique, heartfelt and forceful body of work for the benefit of young people in State care.
Creative writing and poetry from young people in Berry Street School will be interpreted by renowned Victorian street and contemporary artist Kaff-eine and painted as a series of large and small street art murals on walls across Melbourne; including one that will take up a whole inner-city laneway.
A coffee-table book titled HEARTCORE will then be launched at the conclusion of the project, made up of professional and artistic photographs of the murals together with the writing.
Kaff-eine will begin painting the first image between 8-10 November in Rutledge Lane in the Melbourne CBD, off Hosier lane.
The first story she will illustrate is by a young person reflecting on a particularly troubled point in their life, when they were plagued with social isolation, anger, anxiety, violence and self-harm; all of which the image aims to reflect.
The wall-space has kindly been donated by the All Your Walls event, which is supported by the National Gallery of Victoria as part of Melbourne Now.
The 2.53 metre high image will be situated about two thirds of the way up the wall, with red ribbons streaming around 10 metres down below the character to the ground. It will be painted with aerosol and possibly acrylic paint, depending on the weather.
Members of the public are welcome to watch the painting take shape although there is likely to be traffic control, as most of the painting is taking place high up the wall with scissor lifts and cranes.
In other Kaff related news, a new exclusive series of 4 prints will be arriving at S&N mid-November. The price, edition sizes and print sizes are yet to be confirmed. We can however share with you the beautiful images, pictured below.
