'My inspiration generally falls into two categories - one is discovering and translating the beauty of shapes and forms of familiar natural or man made things, and giving them an extra dimension on paper.

My photorealistic pen on paper drawings are the result of this natural evolution. My process involves most of the things that I've learned previously in various disciplines - from traditional watercolour painting and film photography to digital graphic design.'

Marianna Marx's 'Little Lady' October 11 2016

Here at Signed & Numbered we just love Marianna Marx and her soft, pastel coloured illustrations. They are feminine and whimsical, a throw back to the magical world depicted in children's book by authors like Enid Blyton (who didn't love The Magic Faraway Tree when they were young?).

Marianna has been drawing or “making things” (as her 5 year old self would say) for as long as she can remember. Her earliest introduction to stories have played an influential role in the drawings she creates till this day.

Picture books including Where the Wild Things Are, lyrics from folk songs as well as stories from her parent’s endless travels have led Marianna’s mind to wander into places where absolutely anything is possible.
Tiny fragments from her enormous collection of vintage books and travel brochures often weave their way in to her drawings, adding to the sense of escapism or journey to an imaginary world or fantastical situation. Her ideas come from a range of places and often find her at very inconvenient times; most often just before she is about to fall asleep.

She is inspired by all sorts of things including the places that she has travelled to, her fascination for nature and the changing seasons, patterns and music. Marianna also draws inspiration from the children she teaches in her art classes, who are some of her most honest and insightful critics and her first port of call when stuck on a particular drawing.

Through her drawings Marianna hopes to hint at a narrative without giving away the whole story. She hopes that imagination of people who view her artwork is temporarily sparked to escape in to another time or place.

To celebrate the launch of four new limited edition prints exclusive to Signed & Numbered, Marianna has created a magical world of her own in the window of our Degraves Street print shop. Walk by, wave or come on in and admire Marianna's 'Little Lady' and new print release.

VINTAGE PLAYING CARD SCREEN PRINTS / MAURICE GOLOTTA May 26 2016

Maurizio Sergio Golotta aka MSG is a Melbourne based artist. With roots in graffiti and graphic design MSG’s artwork is often bold and colourful with a strong emphasis on design. As a kid growing up in the 80’s he was a sponge for pop culture and the golden era of graphic design (pre computers) where things still had a handmade/ hand finished quality to them. His work reflects this sense of nostalgia more often than not especially in his pop art body of work.

Working with a range of different mediums from Acrylics, oils, spray paint, screenprinting and resins. At the other end of MSG’s graphic pop art work is his Abstract paintings, where colours bleed, blend and crash into each other creating mountainous geometrical colour landscapes.

‘Colours are like people, everyone has a different relationship with each other’. MSG

New to our MSG offering are these unique screen printed Vintage Playing Cards. As we only have a handful of these they are available in our Greville Street print shop only on a first-come first-served basis.

Paper Size: 1000 x 700mm
Medium: Screen print
Price: $250
Paper: Acid Free

DEGRAVES STREET TAKEOVER: SEAN MORRIS (PERTH) May 15 2016

Sean Morris is a Perth-born, Melbourne-based artist and illustrator.
His practice is built on economical line drawings, with simple but striking colours, created with traditional mass-production printing techniques in mind - silk screens, risograph and letterpress.

The subjects of his work flicker between the trashy and the beautiful... nostalgic odes to human strangeness and outsider culture.

His original pen work will be gracing our Degraves Street window till mid-June. Drop by and get your low-brow fix.
